Meet Tess

Hi, I’m Tess, the Lead GCSE English Tutor at TicTuition!

I graduated from the University of Surrey with a degree in English Literature and have spent over 10 years helping students build confidence and achieve outstanding results in English. Over the years, I’ve supported hundreds of students in securing top GCSE grades, including 8s and 9s.

Alongside tutoring, I work as the Head of Content Production at a marketing agency, where I spend every day writing, editing and creating high-quality content. This professional experience gives me an in-depth understanding of language, communication and what makes great writing.

Above all, I’m passionate about helping students succeed. Whether it’s analysing Shakespeare, improving essay structure or mastering creative writing, I aim to make English engaging, approachable and enjoyable.

When I’m not teaching, you’ll usually find me with my nose in a book. I’m a lifelong lover of literature, and I believe that enthusiasm is one of the best things a tutor can pass on to their students.

Building Confidence with Exam Practice

Success in GCSE English isn’t just about knowing the content—it’s about applying it under pressure. That’s why we focus heavily on timed practice, structured feedback, and exam-style tasks that mirror AQA past papers. Through regular, low-stress mock questions, students learn to manage timing, understand what examiners want, and avoid common mistakes. Over time, they gain the confidence and clarity needed to approach every question with purpose.

Proven Results with Edexcel Students

We’ve helped students move from Grade 5s to 8s and 9s in both Language and Literature. Whether you need help understanding the demands of creative writing or structuring a poetry comparison essay, our tailored support makes the difference.

FAQs

What does the Edexcel GCSE English exam involve?

The Edexcel GCSE English qualification is made up of separate English Language and English Literature exams. English Language focuses on reading, analysing and comparing unseen and non-fiction texts, as well as developing students’ ability to write effectively for different purposes and audiences. English Literature involves studying set texts, including prose, poetry and drama, and requires students to analyse characters, themes, language, structure and context. At TicTuition, lessons are tailored to the specific Edexcel requirements so students can develop both their knowledge and exam technique.

English Language focuses primarily on how students read, analyse and respond to a range of texts, as well as how effectively they can communicate their own ideas in writing. English Literature focuses on set texts and requires students to explore themes, characters, relationships, language, structure and context in detail. Both require strong analytical and essay-writing skills, but the content and exam approach are different.

The texts studied for Edexcel GCSE English Literature depend on the texts selected by the student’s school. The qualification includes areas such as a Shakespeare play, a post-1914 British play or novel, a 19th-century novel and poetry. If your child is unsure about their set texts or needs help with a particular text, lessons can be tailored around the texts they are studying at school.

Yes. I offer tutoring for both Edexcel GCSE English Language and English Literature. Lessons can focus on one subject or both, depending on your child’s needs, upcoming exams and areas for improvement.

Yes. I can help students identify what is currently holding their grade back and work on the specific skills needed to progress. This might include improving analysis, developing more sophisticated interpretations, strengthening essay structure or becoming more precise with exam technique. While every student’s progress is different, focused and consistent support can help students work towards their target grade with greater confidence.

Absolutely. Every student has different strengths, weaknesses and learning goals, so lessons are adapted accordingly. We can focus on specific areas such as essay writing, analysing quotations, set texts, unseen texts, exam technique or building confidence. Lessons can also be adjusted as your child progresses and their priorities change.

This depends on your child’s current level, goals and how much support they need. Some students benefit from weekly lessons throughout the year, while others may choose more frequent sessions in the lead-up to mocks or GCSE exams. Weekly tutoring provides a good opportunity to build skills consistently while allowing time between lessons to practise and complete any recommended work.

The first lesson is an opportunity to understand your child’s current level, strengths and areas for development. We’ll discuss what they’re studying at school, their target grade and any upcoming assessments or exams. I may also use some initial questions or written work to identify areas that need attention. From there, we can create a focused approach that targets the skills and topics your child needs most.
